Circle Line Challenge
Turn scales, keys, and harmony into an exciting London-inspired musical journey!

The Circle Line Challenge is a hands-on, motivational system designed to help piano students confidently master:

• scales and key signatures around the Circle of Fifths
• chord building and harmonic progressions
• fifth relations and thinking in key

Inspired by the London Underground, students “travel” around the Circle of Fifths — just like riding the Circle Line — collecting beautiful London monument stickers as they complete each key. By combining visual learning, practical playing, and a fun reward system, students stay motivated while steadily building strong technical and theoretical foundations. Designed as a complete, progressive system, the Circle Line Challenge provides structured keyboard harmony work that can be used consistently across multiple terms and three levels of study.

🎵 How It Works

Students begin in C major and work their way around the Circle of Fifths, traveling first through the sharp keys (moving up a fifth each time) and then through the flat keys (moving down a fifth each time).

For each new key, they:

✔ play scales (pentascales, one octave, or two octaves depending on level)
✔ explore key signatures
✔ practice chords, chord inversions, and progressions
✔ earn stamps or checkmarks
✔ collect a London monument sticker for each completed “station” (key)

Teachers can set the pace — one key per week, every two weeks, or whatever suits each student. The visual progress and sense of journey keep students engaged and excited to continue.

📘 Three Progressive Levels

Explorer (Elementary)
• Pentascales and five-finger patterns
• Introduction to keys and fifth relationships
• Basic broken chord patterns

Traveller (Late Elementary / Early Intermediate)
• One-octave scales
• Primary chords in all inversions
• Simple primary chord progressions (cadences)

Navigator (Intermediate)
• Two-octave scales and arpeggios
• Cadences in all positions
• Circle of fifths progressions

🚆 Excursions Booklet (Extension Activity)

Designed for more advanced students, the Excursions booklet deepens harmonic understanding by having students:

• build chords on each scale degree
• move through fifth-related progressions
• use inversions smoothly
• identify chords by root and type

Perfect alongside the Navigator level or as a standalone keyboard harmony activity for older students.
